Patch files for existing scenery add-ons

Postby BC_Holger » Tue Aug 01, 2006 6:23 am

Hi all,

as announced in the Tongass manual (p. 30) we are planning to provide patch files for existing add-ons, if feasible.

I'm actually not aware of add-ons other than Naji's Bush Flying Unlimited AVSIM Base that are suitable candidates for such a patch but do let me know if you come across one and I'll see what I can do.

Naji Chehabeddine's BFU base on Kuiu Island - N56°13' W134°06' - is entirely fictitious but one of the long-standing main hubs of the Bush Flying Unlimited community over at AVSIM: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az= ... &forum=143 and http://bfu.avsim.net/

BFU just celebrated its 5th anniversary, with Naji being one of the founding members, so here's to Naji and BFU with a big thank-you for providing lots of fun in the Alaskan bush :D

An interesting bit of information is that it was in the BFU forum that a couple of us did the communal brainstorming and experimenting that led to the tweaks for allowing AI floatplane and AI ship traffic in the sim. Thus, Tongass has some direct BFU roots :wink:

Attached below is the small patch file required to make Naji's AVSIM base compatible with Tongass Fjords. Please follow the instructions provided in the zip.

My apologies! I forgot to include two texture files in the original version of this patch. If you downloaded TF_BFU_AVSIM_Base_patch.zip before August 4th, please re-download it and follow the instructions.

Enjoy!

Holger Sandmann

Ho Holger,

Thank you much obliged for the patch. It's great to see those pioneer sceneries back in the Tongass area.

Actually there is another addon situated in this area. It's from the great bush scenery designer James Belk. He's done a great deal of bush sceneries in BC and AK. And one of the first designers who used the mesh terrain for making interesting landingstrips (sloped etc)

The featured addon is Alaska/BC Bush Scenery: Edgecombe Lodge, Johnny Mountain Mine, & Bob Quinn Lake (AK4.zip at AVSIM.

Rather interesting because they are all situated in either TF or MF
Bob Quin and Johnny Mountain mine aare near Bronson Creek on the Iskut river.

I wonder if these strips can be revived or if they should be remade....:)

Hi, Holger. I installed the patch and it works beautifully, except for the VTPL file that causes a CTD on my newly installed FS2004. I'm using the other three files and they are excellent. Thanks much!

I wonder if we could do something about the cut-off in the hill. I looked at the area without the scenery, and it is a full mountain, so even if I reduce the flatten, there will always be a cut-off.

Anyways, thanks again my friend 8)

Hi Naji,

thank you for alerting me to to the fact that I forgot to include the shoreline texture files. I just updated the download and re-posted it. Mea culpa!

I agree that it's too bad about the mountain being cut off like that. I would think that a slightly smaller flatten would improve on it though, as you said, not fully prevent the cliff. I guess that the default mesh does not have much of a mountain in that area, which is probably why you picked that site in the first place.

I actually attempted to make the cliff more gradual by placing a sloped flatten (LWM3) polygon. It's part of the patch - x_Tongass_patch_W2_BFUbase_LWM3.BGL - but I wasn't able to get it to override your scenery flatten.

Cheers, Holger

Hello Heli,

that looks like one of Leon Louis' add-ons: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?Ca ... DLID=62491

Unfortunately, he placed this scenery, which was meant to be for Misty Fjords, just north of Misty's boundary and based its location on the inaccurate default shorelines. With Tongass Fjords installed, the add-on ends up in the water.

I'll check whether I can add an artificial peninsula to that area to accommodate Leon's add-on. Will keep you posted.

Hi all,

and here's patch No. 2, for

Leon Louis' freeware "The Sandmann's Lodge & Cabins" add-on:

http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?Ca ... DLID=62491

Installation instructions are included in the small zip attached at the end of this post.

Additional tip: if you're also using Leon's "Bradfield Fisheries" add-on for Misty Fjords - http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?Ca ... DLID=61794 - you may want to remove the file "s_patch_tm5_nc_Bradfield_9.bgl" from its scenery subfolder to avoid duplicate roads in the area included with Tongass Fjords.

Thank you, Leon Louis - we miss you!

Cheers, Holger

Hi, Holger,
somehow I had strange problems to login to this forum today. But luckily I made it.

After applying your patch for Leon Louis´ "Sandmann´s Lodge" the lodge continues in the water, i.e. the airstrip is now out of the water with
some land around it. The buildings, planes, people etc continue in water, however, the jetty now is off a stripe of land (like double shoreline
which I don´t have anywhere) separated from the buildings/airstrip by water.
First off, I had a look in the scenery.cfg with regards to Freight Dogs The Scenery since this had been mentioned a few times in the forums.

And this is what I found:

[Area.203]
Title=FreightDogs Airports
Layer=203
Active=TRUE

Local=Aerosoft\Freight Dogs The Scenery\FreightDogs airports
Remote=

[Area.204]
Title=FreightDogs landscape Misty
Layer=204

Local=Aerosoft\Freight Dogs The Scenery\FreightDogs landscape Tongass
Remote=

I have installed:

[Area.041]
Title=Mesh FSG North America (= Alaska 38.2m + Cordillera Canada 38.2m vs. 1.5)

[Area.042]
Title=FSGenesis US Landclass (free version)

[Area.045]
Title=Misty Fjords Landscape (incl. update)

[Area.046]

I have no idea what might be the cause. BTW, in the vicinity, Anan Bay Cabin is on land but Sandmann´s Hideaway
and Bradfield Fisheries are ok. As is everything around Wrangell.
Funny thing the library entry for Freight Dogs The Scenery (area 204) - landscape Misty referring to the folder of landscape Tongass.

Please try to give me a clue.

Many thanks in advance and best regards,
Werner

Hi there,

Werner, please deactivate the "FreightDogs landscape Misty" entry in your scenery library. The Tongass installer should have done this automatically though that depends on whether it detected your installation of Freight Dogs.

However, the issue with the patch for "Sandmann's Lodge" is different and something I should have mentioned in the instructions. If you look in the Tongass manual on page 20 you'll notice that add-on sceneries for both Misty and Tongass are sitting above the main Tongass and Misty entries. Specifically, the patches for Naji's AVSIM base and Leon's Sandmann Lodge work only as intended if those add-ons are situated above the Tongass Fjords entries in the scenery library menu.

Adjusting the library position of those add-ons should do the trick.

Hi all,

and here's patch No. 3, for

Dave Erickson's freeware "Alaskan Docks SE: Package #1" add-on:
http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?Ca ... DLID=11912

as usual, installation instructions are included in the small zip attached at the end of this post.

Pretty cool that a scenery package made almost five years ago can still be used and is looking very nice - enjoy!

Cheers, Holger
